Mathematics at Queen Ethelburga’s

Mathematics is a compulsory subject at Key Stage 4 for all students attending Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate, with the option to continue studying at Key Stage 5.

As well as taking Mathematics at GCSE and A Level, you can dive further into the subject as a Super-Curricular activity or take Statistics at GCSE or A Level.

Key Stage 4 – GCSE Mathematics

99% of students achieved Level 9-4 grades at GCSE in 2023

Mathematics offers something for everyone. It is diverse, engaging and essential in equipping students with the skills to reach their future destination, whatever that may be.

Not only will you learn how to solve complex mathematical equations, but the skills you develop whilst working on mathematical functions will develop your problem-solving abilities in other ways, including pattern spotting, visualising, working systematically and using logical reasoning.

Faculty

At the Faculty, students take GCSE Mathematics as a two-year course with the opportunity for gifted students to study Further Mathematics or AS Level Maths in Year 11.

During lunchtimes and after-school, staff run clinics and additional classes for students who need additional support. These sessions include focus clinics on specific numeracy problems.

College

At the College, Year 10 students complete GCSE Mathematics as a one-year intensive course with the expectation that they will take Further Mathematics in Year 11. There is also the opportunity to take Advanced Mathematics in addition.

In 2023, 12 students achieved Level 7 in GCSE Advanced Mathematics, as well as 15 students achieving Level 9 in Further Mathematics and 14 students achieving Level 9 in Mathematics.

Key Stage 5 - A Level Mathematics

100% A*-C grades at A Level in 2023

A Level Mathematics covers pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics. The subject offers students the opportunity to forge a career at the forefront of technological advancement.

My experience of studying A Level Mathematics in the Sixth Form has been amazing. I appreciate the extra support sessions the teaching staff put in place and the extra effort teachers make. The publication of the retrospective revision timetable has contributed to my revision and the same goes for most of my peers.”

Year 13 Student

Students can choose to take Mathematics as a two-year A Level course or to complete the A Level in Year 12 and take A Level Further Mathematics in Year 13.

There is the additional opportunity to complete Advanced Mathematics as a Super-Curricular activity during a timetabled lesson and after school. Both Further and Advanced Mathematics have a higher uptake in QE College than in QE Faculty.
