Career Guidance

How Do We Support Students With Future Careers?

At Queen Ethelburga’s, career guidance extends beyond career choices; it is centred on preparing students for life beyond the Collegiate. The bespoke programme begins in Year 5 and continues through to Year 13.

Our aim is to raise young people’s aspirations, to develop employability skills and students’ confidence when transitioning between education, training and work.

There are three themes within our ‘QE Futures’ career programme for students’ to progress through: Discover, Develop and Prepare.

"Pupils receive effective guidance to support the decisions they make about the next stage of their education or career. This includes helping pupils to make appropriate subject choices at GCSE and A Level, support in the preparation of university applications and extensive, wide ranging and tailored careers guidance, supplemented by visiting alumni and guest speakers."

1. Discover

The discovery stage aims to advise and guide students of the various post-18 options available, including apprenticeships, gap years, the forces and higher education.

Students begin the programme in Chapter House with visiting speakers and as they advance through school, a range of career lessons are delivered as part of Personal Development.

Discovering Careers in Personal Development

  • Year 6: Group Careers Activity
  • Year 7: Career Options and Introduction to Skills & Attributes
  • Year 8: Jobs of the Future
  • Year 9: Choosing GCSE Options & Using ‘Morrisby’
  • Year 10: Types of Employment & Completing Virtual Work Experience

From Key Stage Three, students access Morrisby, a careers website that helps students discover career options tailored to their strengths and interests.

In Year 11, students complete a more comprehensive profiling assessment, which recommends careers and courses based on students’ verbal, numerical, and abstract aptitudes, as well as their interests and personality. After completing the assessment, one of our Career Advisors conducts one-to-one meetings to guide and discuss the profile with each student.

2. Develop

The next stage is developing employability skills for future success. These skills refer to abilities that are essential for thriving in the workplace, such as building resilience, developing analytical and creative thinking or teaching students how to use AI. Currently, the skills considered are based on the World Economic Forum Skills Report.
